Lana’s journey is a testament to resilience, showing how life can change in an instant—and how organizations like Goodwill can make all the difference.
Originally from Ukraine, Lana lived a comfortable life with her husband and young son. She had a career in banking, utilizing her background in economics, and everything seemed stable. But when Russia’s war on Ukraine began, everything changed. Forced to leave their home behind, Lana and her son fled to Poland, where they stayed with friends for six months. Eventually, thanks to the support of friends in the U.S., they were able to move here, and later, her husband joined them.
While waiting for her work permit, Lana discovered a program through Job & Family Services that led her to Goodwill. She started by sorting donations, marking the beginning of her journey with the organization. It didn’t take long for the team to recognize Lana’s skills, and she transitioned into a role with our Business Services Department, where she helped assemble kits for the Whirlpool contract, counted inventory, and managed parts. The team’s support was invaluable as Lana adjusted to life in the U.S. They encouraged her to apply for a position at one of Goodwill’s retail stores, and she embraced the opportunity.
Lana quickly felt a deep connection to Goodwill and its mission. It wasn’t just a job—it was a place where people could grow, find a sense of belonging, and make a tangible difference in their lives.
In December 2022, Lana applied for the assistant team lead position at Goodwill’s Marion store. Her dedication and hard work led to a promotion to team lead coach at the Bucyrus store in February of this year. As her career at Goodwill flourished, so did her passion for helping others. For Lana, her role evolved beyond just a paycheck—it became about guiding others and offering them the same support that helped her succeed.
Lana sums it up beautifully: “Goodwill’s programs create jobs, support families, and provide resources like education, training, housing, and senior assistance. It’s not just about giving someone a fish when they’re hungry; it’s about teaching them how to fish.” Today, Lana is not just a success story—she is an integral part of something bigger, helping people pursue their dreams. At Goodwill, Good Happens Here.
