Rick: Real Stories. New Lives.

The moment you drop off donations at our Goodwill, your items begin a brand new journey. That donated basketball? It helps people like Rick gain job skills and take their shot at a new career.

Every donation supports local programs that empower individuals to grow, learn, and build brighter futures—right here at home.

Goodwill is committed to helping seniors find work, develop new skills, and build financial security through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). This on-the-job training program empowers older adults by updating their job skills, building confidence, and fostering economic stability.

During the pandemic, Rick faced unemployment after losing his job due to COVID-related complications. With no income, he felt uncertain about his future—until he saw an advertisement for Goodwill’s SCSEP program on social media. After reaching out and qualifying, Rick began his journey toward rebuilding his career.

  • His first placement was at the American Red Cross office in Marion, where he provided office support.
  • He then transitioned to Goodwill’s Corporate Office as a receptionist.
  • Now, Rick is training as a Loss Prevention Assistant, gaining even more valuable experience.

Rick describes his experience with Goodwill as helpful, inspiring, and uplifting. He feels like he has purpose again and is actively working toward his goal of securing a permanent position as an office assistant specializing in customer service. Through NorthStar Digital Literacy assessments, job readiness classes, and S.M.A.R.T. goal planning, he is equipping himself for long-term success.

“All I ever wanted from the SCSEP program was a hand-up, not a handout—and that’s exactly what I’m receiving.”

Rick’s story is a testament to the power of opportunity and support. At Goodwill, Good Happens Here.
