Success Story: Meet Lucy

After five years of unemployment and living on SSDI, Lucy was ready to reenter the workforce—but needed the right support to make it happen. While enrolled in another Goodwill program, she learned about the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) and saw a new opportunity to rebuild her career.

Today, Lucy is receiving paid training at the Goodwill Education and Training Center, where she’s gaining valuable skills and rebuilding her confidence.

“My time at Goodwill has been very good, and I am learning a lot. I’ve gained experience networking with people I would not have met otherwise. This training takes me back to my roots—where I started out as an administrative assistant.”

Lucy has over 17 years of experience in medical billing, a field she is passionate about. But after years away from the workforce, she knew things had changed. SCSEP is helping her learn the updated skills and technology she needs to reenter the medical billing field—with the goal of eventually retiring from the career she loves.

In addition to building her professional skills, Lucy shared that the program has helped her achieve personal stability.

“Since starting SCSEP, I’ve been able to pay my bills without struggling. I can now afford things like internet and cell phone service—things that once felt like luxuries.”

“SCSEP means I can have the life I haven’t had for the past five years. I appreciate being able to receive paid training instead of handouts. I grew up on a farm—we worked for everything we had.”

We’re proud to support Lucy on her journey and inspired by her determination to reclaim her career and independence.
